Operation Safe Passage was conducted yesterday (March 17th) in the vicinity of NAPA,
Leeward Highway by the Traffic Enforcement Unit.

A total of 42 traffic checks resulted in 25 tickets issued, 6 tint removals, and 6 vehicles towed.
Additionally, two (2) persons were warned of intended prosecution for offences including
driving without insurance and unlicensed driving, while one (1) person was arrested on a
commitment warrant.

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RT&CIPF) is reminding motorists that seat
belt laws exist to protect lives, especially the lives of children. Our officers continue to observe
concerning and dangerous practices on the roads, including children sitting on adults’ laps in
both front and rear seats, standing between seats, and sitting on the middle console while
vehicles are in motion. These actions are not only illegal but also pose a serious risk of injury or
death.

Parents, guardians, and drivers are strongly urged to ensure that all children are properly seated
in the back seat and always secured with a seat belt. Adults are also reminded that wearing a seat
belt is mandatory. Drivers must lead by example by ensuring that both they and their passengers
are properly restrained before the vehicle begins moving.
Under the Road Traffic Act (13:01):
- Section 52 (Children): Driving a motor vehicle in contravention of children not wearing a seat
belt also carries a fine of $250. - Section 51 (Adults): Driving or riding in a motor vehicle in contravention of the seat belt
regulation carries a fine of $250.

The operation was led by Acting Inspector Damien Mitchell and included Acting Assistant
Superintendent Kirton Sutton, Acting Sergeant Joshua Lightbourne, and Constables Raheem
Watson, Romaine Martin, and Odrae Fowling.
