The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force with the support of the Turks and Caicos Islands Government is poised to increase security measures on the Island of Grand Turk through the installation of a Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera monitoring system, following a spree of vandalism, intentional fires and other serious crimes on that island.

It was announced in 2018 that plans were underway for Phase 2 of the CCTV project to see Grand Turk mapped out.  At this stage, more than 40 CCTV high definition and high-resolution cameras will be installed in 40 plus different locations around Grand Turk, identified by the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.

Commissioner of Police Mr. Trevor Botting said, “The installation of CCTV cameras in as many areas as possible on Grand Turk will allow us to monitor criminal activities there, as we do on the island of Providenciales.  CCTV has reduced the time and increased the success rate of finding stolen or stashed vehicles. Even when we are dealing with something which isn’t a crime, something like a crash, we’ve got cameras straight on that.  We can make a better assessment of what resources are needed.”

Commissioner Botting added, “Our CCTV system is completely operational and have been a huge help to us and we are grateful to all involved in the CCTV project for their hard work.

Meanwhile, Premier Hon. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson commenting on the announcement said bringing this technology to the country is key to assist crimefighting measures.

Premier Cartwright-Robinson said, “The work has been carried out as part of my Government ‘s investment in the provision of CCTVs across the country with the purpose of assisting the RTCIPF in the prevention and detection of crime. To date we have invested approximately $2.4m and we are happy to provide this support in this way. Phase 2 of this innovative project, will see a collaborative effort with the RTCIPF and the Road Safety Department to see the Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems installed and to later introduce front and rear license plates to the motoring public”.

The Premier added, “We look forward to continue the great working relationship with the RTCIPF and providing the necessary resources to combat crime during this critical time”.

The under-mentioned information refers to the areas of CCTV coverage for Grand Turk.

The cameras will transmit images in real-time back to the 911 Control Room in Providenciales, where they will be monitored and used when incidents are reported to specific areas.

Digicel Turks and Caicos have signed the contract to install and maintain the cameras on Grand Turk as they have for Phase 1(Providenciales).

Phase two of the project will also see the installation of the ANPR (Automatic number plate recognition) system for both Providenciales and Grand Turk.

The Grand Turk CCTV system is expected to go live before the end of the year.
